Elodee is passionate about giving a voice to other survivors. This is her story but hers is one of too many that need to be heard.
Domestic violence can happen to anyone. People of all ages, races, ethnicities, socio-economic statuses, gender identities, abilities and religions can face domestic violence at any time or place.
The only person responsible for domestic violence is the abuser.
If you are in crisis or need resources please contact one of the resources below.
Visual Artist Mya Bessette collaborated with Elodee S to inspire other survivors to see hope and to open the door to their own stories being heard.
We want to use this platform to highlight the voices of survivors. Each story is their own and worthy of being heard. If you are a survivor or a family member of a victim or survivor and want to share your story, please contact us and allow us to share your voice. We want to empower and validate your lived experience.
The net proceeds from all products sold on this site will be used to further the education and support of survivors of acts of violence.
The original works of "Survivorscape" are on permanent loan to the City of Beaverton, OR and on display inside the entrance of the Beaverton Safety Center.
It is our hope that this collaboration and art installation serves as a constant reminder to all who witness it, of the journey of the victims and the survivors.
Survivorscape is a passion project, driven from my experience of intimate partner violence. Although my experience does not define me, it is now a part of my life story; a part that I have claimed. In claiming it, I can bring awareness to a topic that often goes unnoticed or silent. It was through the deepest waves of my journey that I quickly realized these situations happen too frequently and to any gender, race, class, ability, and religion.
I want these paintings to mean something to you - whether you find yourself within them or notice the experience of someone you love in them. Your story matters. You matter. You deserve to gain the validation you need.
These paintings hang side by side as a journey, although with trauma of any kind these scenes can flood back vividly and out of sequence.
To my fellow survivors... There is no direct line to healing or recovery when surviving domestic violence or any other trauma. And while our stories may have similarities, they are also very different. I wish we did not have to be similar in this way. However you decide how to heal your wounds and to add this chapter to your life story is the right way for you. You are not alone. In my experience, in what seemed like a never-ending battle, I found hope.
Thank you for taking a moment to be present with these paintings! My desire is that they spark light in conversation, healing in hidden wounds, and awareness to be shared within our community.
Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals and improve awareness. Your generous donation will fund our mission to further the Survivorscape project.
Nationally acclaimed abstract acrylic and mixed media artist, Mya Bessette, grew up on the shores of the Pacific Ocean in Homer Alaska and now paints from her studio in Bigfork, MT.
This art project was commissioned as a collaboration between Mya and Elodee to bring to life the stories of Elodee's emotions and feelings prior to and through her experiences as a survivor of domestic violence.
Mya focusses on bringing out emotion and feelings through her use of color and light in her abstracts and cloudscapes.
